PERMITS

OTHER NATIONALITIES FOR EMIGRATION TO CURAÇAO

YOU HAVE MADE THE CHOICE TO EMIGRATE TO CURAÇAO, NOW WHAT?

You don't have a Dutch or American nationality? Then you belong to the category "Foreigner", a term that the Admission Organization/office (or the so called Toelatingsorganisatie) here in Curaçao uses for it. Every foreigner who wants to stay in Curaçao for a longer period of time must in any case apply for a residence permit and, if there is also work involved, a work permit as well. Permits that must be applied for depend on nationality, length of stay and the reason why you wish to come to Curaçao.

All permits are subject to the payment of dues and fees to the government here. The amounts depend on the purpose of your stay. You can apply for a permit with the purpose of intern / student / employee / director / retirement, remote worker or as a so-called penshonado (local term for a retired person and in possession of real estate on the island). There is also the possibility to submit a permit based on investment, the investment permit. Each residence permit requires several documents which must be submitted to the Admission Organization (also called the TO or emigration office of Curaçao). This also applies to the work permit if you are going to work in Curaçao.

If you want to work in Curaçao, you must have an employer who will vouch for you and file or arrange for the filing of the job application and work permit (TWV). If you continue to work in Curaçao for your employer who is located abroad then you should apply for a permit with the purpose of remote worker. In principle, you must await the granting or rejection of the decision (work permit and/or residence permit) abroad unless your decision is ready if you are staying in Curaçao on the basis of tourist stay and this term has not been exceeded. The maximum duration for tourist stay varies per country.

Please keep in mind that it is a lengthy process with various procedures and conditions you need to meet in order to apply for the proper permits. The processing time for obtaining a work permit is currently 8 weeks to 4 months. For a residence permit it can sometimes take up to 5 or over 6 months before the decision is ready. If you need both permits, it can currently take up to 8 months till one year before you have them.
